Training Manuals Project

As the current group of pastors nears the end of their training we have decided that it’s time to re develop our training material so that new cohorts and their Volunteer Trainers will have a comprehensive set of manuals written to guide trainers through the teaching of each module of the 3 year course.    Dr Judy Luhombo is leading the development of these manuals in co-operation with our staff trainers and the Head of Training.  The manuals will provide not only the content to be taught but will establish the key Achievement Based Objectives (ABO) that will describe what we expect pastors to learn from each module. An example of an ABO might be to be able to preach from a specific passage in Romans and to demonstrate an understanding of the gospel of grace.

Pastors will be involved in a number of learning tasks to help;p them achieve these objectives, such as small group work as well as individual assignments. The manuals will lay out for trainers what these learning tasks are and when they should occur each day during the training week thus reducing the trainers preparation time.  The manuals will developed and tested in the field to ensure that they meet the needs of trainers and are also at the right level for rural pastors.

Judy is a graduate and post graduate from Wales Evangelical School of Theology (WEST now Union School of Theology) in the UK and  administering their Distance Learning Programme.  She is well qualified and suited to the production of ART’s Training Manuals and has a passion for equipping rural pastors and understands the need to produce material that is at an appropriate level for these pastors.

Sad News

We are sad to have to report that Pastor Samuel from the Adiedo training cohort has died after a short illness.  He leaves a wife, Grace and 9 children who mourn for their loss as do the rest of the class.  We can be sure that he is with the Lord “which is far better”.  The hearts of the ART family go out to the grieving family and our prayers are with them.

“The ART Story” documentary released.

We are thrilled to announce that a short documentary about ART has now been released featuring interviews with several pastors who have been trained by ART.  The documentary tells the story of how ART got started as a result of the 2007 & 2008 Post Election Violence in Kenya,  described by Pastor Bernard and ART graduate and a victim of the violence in 2008.

Through interviews with urban pastors and Lameck another ART graduate, now a volunteer trainer, the huge gulf between urban and rural pastors in terms of bible training and financial support is revealed.  Anthony, our Head of Training describes ART’s approach to training and interviews a number of pastors about the impact that ART has had on their lives.

Play the video in this post or check it out on our new website home page.  We hope that you will be moved by the video and thank God for the way in which pastors, their families and the church is being transformed by His Word.

Agricultural Extension Officer Appointed

We are delighted to announce that ART has appointed Zacharia Kamau to the post of Agricultural Extension Officer. Zach has recently completed his diploma at Baraka Agricultural College and is excited about joining ART. Zach has a passion for training and showing others how they can improve their farming to maximise the potential of their land and animals.

Many of the pastors that ART trains have to farm their land, where they have some land, in order to survive. Rural churches are not able to provide a salary for the pastor, unlike urban churches where pastors receive a salary from the church and are well supported. There are many challenges to farming in Kenya even though some areas such as the Western and Nyanza province are highly fertile and crops can often be grown year round. These challenges sometimes arise from the mix or type of crops that farmers grow and a lack of diversification.

We pray that Zach will have much success in improving the rural pastors farming and increasing their income and range of food that they can produce.

Eight new centres launched!

Over the last two months ART has launched eight new centers with help from some of the pastors that completed their training this year. The centers are in the Coast region and Nyanza Province, see the home page map for details or click here. We thank God for the privilege and opportunity to begin the training of another group of needy pastors who have not received any formal bible training yet are seeking to teach and pastor their churches as best they can.  Please pray for these pastors as they begin their training, pray that He would equip them to better understand His word to be able to teach their congregations well, grow in Godliness and be able to better pastor His people.  Pray that they will remain committed to spending one week per month attending their training center as it’s a great commitment of time amidst their other responsibilities.
